Protecting product integrity through weather-based shipping logic.
Weather-Based Shipping Logic to Protect Product Integrity

Kate McLeod, a wellness brand known for its solid moisturizers and lotion bars, faced a unique challenge: protecting product integrity during warm-weather shipping. With heat-sensitive formulas prone to melting in transit, the team needed a dynamic solution that could adapt to real-time temperature data without disrupting the customer experience. Myntr partnered with Kate McLeod’s logistics and CX teams to build a custom middleware layer that pulled live weather forecasts and adjusted shipping methods at checkout.

PROJECT TYPE: Custom shipping logic tied to real-time weather data

TIMEFRAME: Six Months

TECH STACK: Shopify, Datajet, Recharge, Klaviyo, custom middleware

SERVICES: Custom development, shipping rules architecture, UX strategy

TEAM: Led end-to-end by our dev team in collaboration with Kate McLeod’s logistics and CX leads

Challenge

Kate McLeod’s product line, solid moisturizers and lotion bars, is uniquely vulnerable to temperature changes during transit. In warmer climates or summer months, standard shipping methods often led to melting or compromised deliveries.

The goal: create a weather-aware shipping experience that dynamically adjusts available shipping methods based on the real-time temperature at the customer’s shipping location, all while keeping the UX clean and automated.

Approach

We engineered a custom weather-based logic layer that determines which shipping methods appear at checkout based on the forecasted temperature for the delivery address.

KEY FEATURES INCLUDED:

  • Auto-selection of Warm Weather Shipping if the local temp exceeds 85°F
  • Standard shipping defaults for cooler climates (below threshold)
  • Separate logic for Recharge subscriptions and Shopify one-time orders
  • Intelligent handling of 1 or 2-pack orders, which have different melting thresholds
  • Integration with WeatherAPI.com’s forecast API to make real-time decisions
  • Zero disruption to checkout UX. Customers only see shipping methods that match their location.
Execution & Implementation

The system was built as a dynamic decision engine between Shopify’s checkout and the weather API, triggering logic based on temperature and cart contents.

WHAT WE DELIVERED:

  • Custom middleware to evaluate cart details and pull live temperature forecasts
  • Logic to control which shipping methods appear for different SKUs or bundle sizes
  • Seamless Recharge integration for subscription orders
  • Testing framework to simulate different weather conditions for QA
  • Admin interface for internal testing and rule overrides
